چکیده

To assess the potential volume of a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) more precisely than in previous studies, we analyze ground survey data and remote-sensing digital elevation models (DEMs) around glacial lakes in the Lunana region, Bhutan. Based on a DEM generated from differential GPS ground surveys, we first evaluate the relative accuracies of DEMs produced by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Root-mean-square errors of the altitudinal difference between these DEMs and ground survey data were 11.0m for ASTER and 11.3m for SRTM. These errors are similar to those of previous studies. We show that a topographical classification allows a better estimate of elevation on lakes/ ponds, riverbeds and glaciers due to their flat surfaces, while the relative accuracy is worse over moraines and hill slopes due to their narrow ridges and steep slopes. Using the optical satellite images and the ground survey data, we re-evaluate the GLOF volume in 1994 as (17.2 5.3) 10m. We show GLOF-related information such as distance, altitudinal difference and gradient at possible outburst points where the lake level is higher than the neighboring riverbed and/or glacial lake.

Evaluations for Potential of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (glofs) in the Bhutan Himalaya Using Prism and Avnir-2 Onboard Alos

The objectives of this study are to validate generated Digital Surface Models (DSMs) by PRISM onboard the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS, nicknamed “Daichi”) in snow and glacier regions to contribute to the evaluation of potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and their mitigation in the Bhutan Himalaya. Glacial lake inventory will also be generated to investigate the expansion ...

Remote sensing-based hazard assessment of glacial lakes in Sikkim Himalaya

Glacial lake is a water body formed in/under/besides and/or in front of a glacier due to glacial dynamics. Such high-altitude glacial lakes are hazardous to humanity and infrastructure as they can drain instantaneous and create devastating floods in the downstream. The formation of moraine-dammed glacial lakes and glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) is major concern in countries such as Bhutan, ...

Erosion Relevant Topographical Parameters Derived from Different DEMs - A Comparative Study from the Indian Lesser Himalayas

Topography is a crucial surface characteristic in soil erosion modeling. Soil erosion studies use a digital elevation model (DEM) to derive the topographical characteristics of a study area. Majority of the times, a DEM is incorporated into erosion models as a given parameter and it is not tested as extensively as are the parameters related to soil, land-use and climate. This study compares ero...

Glacial lake inventory of Bhutan using ALOS data: Part I. Methods and preliminary results

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) is relatively new. Its optical sensors are capable of making high-resolution digital surface models (DSMs). For the first time, the task of constructing a regional-scale inventory of glacial lakes based on ALOS data has been undertaken. This study presents the data-processing methods and the results of validation and analysis on the ALOS-based glacia...
